Arriving in Hampi

Hampi does not reveal itself all at once. You come over a rise in the road and suddenly the landscape breaks open into a sea of giant granite boulders, stacked as if by some restless giant, glowing amber in the late afternoon light.

The Ruins of Vijayanagara

Once the capital of the Vijayanagara Empire, Hampi was among the richest cities in the medieval world. Today its temples, bazaars and royal enclosures spread across 26 square kilometres of the Tungabhadra river valley.

  • Virupaksha Temple still hums with daily worship after 700 years.
  • Vittala Temple holds the famous stone chariot and musical pillars.
  • Matanga Hill rewards a dawn climb with the finest view in Karnataka.

When to go

The cool, dry months from October to February are ideal. Rent a bicycle, lose the map, and let the ruins find you.
